Brief Information on Beach Volleyball
Beach volleyball began on the coast of California as early as 1920. Volleyball grew slowly in the early years and has been rapidly growin in popularity since the early 1990's. With the NCAA sanctioning sand volleyball in 2011 the sport has seen a spike in young players. The 2012 all USA gold medal match at the Beijing Olympic Games was the highest viewed event with 29 million viewers.
The game of beach volleyball is associated with the California beach lifestyle and is a fun active sport that appeals to a broad range of people. The sport is a true competition between teams of two players that doesn't rely on a judge's score, but on each team's athleticism. The sport provides a great venue for both the players and spectators in a family fun atmosphere on the beautiful beaches of Santa Cruz.
About The Tournament Director David Yeakel
I have been involved in beach volleyball for over twenty years, and have run tournaments at the Harbor Beach for 12 years. Since the Cuervo Pro Tour stopped coming to Santa Cruz I felt there was a void in professional tournaments in the area. Our tour has become progressively bigger as I've found that there is great interest from players. Since the last Summer Olympics Volleyball has been an even larger growth in the sport. Our tournaments are recognized by USA Volleybal. USA Volleyball is the governing body for all indoor and beach volleyball in the United States. Our events feature pro beach volleyball men and women as well as intermediate level players and junior events. Each year we have drawn a high level of pro players including past Olympians. We are eagerly anticipating that in 2014 the A.V.P. (the largest professional volleyball tour) will be back in Santa Cruz and we will be running a qualifying series for the event.
The main goal for this year's tour is to offer great entertainment for players and fans alike with live music and refreshments at our tiki bar. As well as producing a solid marketing platform that will create a symbiotic relashionship between our sponsors, players and fans. Not to mention some of the best men's and women's teams battling it out on the sand for cash and prizes.
